In Ireland, primary and post-primary schools are managed by Boards of Management on behalf of the school patron. In Co Donegal, we are the patron of fifteen of Co Donegal’s twenty-seven post-primary schools (and also act as a trustee partner for a further eight Community and Comprehensive schools). But what exactly is a member of a Board of Management responsible for? In this blog, our Director of Schools, Dr Martin Gormley, explains the role of a Board of Management member.
Being a member of a Board of Management in a post-primary school under the patronage of Donegal Education and Training Board (ETB) is both an honour and a responsibility. After the recent local elections in June 2024, Donegal Education and Training Board will appoint new members to all fifteen schools directly under our management, as well as the eight Community and Comprehensive Schools in the county, during September and October of this year. As we look to the future, the role of the Board of Management will continue to evolve. With ongoing changes in educational practices and the increasing importance of technology in learning, the board’s role in steering the school through these developments is more critical than ever.
