In today’s fast-paced world, staying ahead in your career often means continuously learning and developing new skills. Finding time to undertake substantial blocks of learning is often not possible because of the time commitment involved. That’s where micro-credentials can help, but what is it like to do one? In this blog, one of our former part-time Further Education and Training (FET) Service students, Eamon Friel, tells us about his experience of undertaking one such course, the Level 4 Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial intelligence isn’t something that’s “on the way”; it’s already here, shaping how we work, interact, and solve problems. Working in resiliency, I see every day how emerging technologies influence organisational preparedness and response. That’s why I decided to enrol in the Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (Level 4) micro‑credential with Donegal ETB: to build a strong foundation in AI and ensure that I stay ahead of the curve in my field.

Why I Chose to Study AI

AI is transforming industries at a pace we’ve never seen before. As someone responsible for supporting resiliency across a large healthcare organisation, I need to understand the tools and technologies that are becoming integral to decision‑making, risk management, and operational continuity. I wanted to understand what’s behind the systems, how they work, and what they mean for the future of my profession. This micro‑credential felt like the right first step.

What the Course Covered

The programme is designed to equip learners with foundational knowledge, skills, and competencies in the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence. Throughout the course, we explored the core concepts of AI, its history, how it has developed over time, and the real‑world applications shaping modern life. We also examined ethical considerations, an area that is especially relevant in healthcare and resiliency work.

What I appreciated most was how accessible the material was. The course didn’t assume prior technical knowledge; instead, it steadily built understanding, layer by layer. By the end, I felt I had not only grasped the fundamentals but also gained confidence in my ability to continue learning more advanced AI topics.

Learning While Working Full-Time

Balancing study with full-time work can sometimes feel daunting, but the micro‑credential structure made it manageable and surprisingly enjoyable. I work from home most of the time, so having the course delivered in person was a refreshing change of pace. Our tutor, Pranav, was incredibly knowledgeable and created an engaging environment where questions and discussions were encouraged. The sessions were structured in short, focused blocks, which were perfect for someone juggling a busy work schedule.

The part-time format meant I never felt overwhelmed. I could absorb the content at a steady pace and reflect on how each piece connected back to my role.

The Benefits of the Course

One of the biggest benefits was gaining a solid grounding in what AI is and the real concepts and systems behind it. Understanding AI’s origins and fundamentals has given me a stronger lens through which to view the changes happening across our sector. I’m already applying that insight in my day‑to‑day work, especially when considering the risks, opportunities, and implications of new technologies.

Just as importantly, the course has set me up for what comes next. I now feel ready to continue my learning journey with Donegal ETB and progress to the QQI Level 5 micro‑credential in Enhancing Productivity. The micro-credential opened the door to a whole new pathway of growth.

Conclusion

If you’re working full-time and curious about AI, this micro‑credential is a great way to start. It’s flexible, engaging, and immediately relevant. For me, it was the perfect foundation, and I’m excited to build on it as I continue my upskilling journey.
