In these years my wife Orsi and I have created a few ensembles and very rewarding musical collaborations, but most importantly we have made Letterkenny home.

Orsi is a violinist and originally from Hungary. I am from Malaga in Spain. We met during our music studies at the University of Limerick. In September 2005 Orsi, then my girlfriend, got a job as violin resource tutor with the DMEP. My first visit to Donegal was the following month, October.

The DMEP was just starting. They wanted to offer cello lessons across the county. I went with Orsi to a rehearsal of the Donegal Youth Orchestra in the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town. They asked me to take a rehearsal of the cello section, which I did. As a result, I was invited to tutor for the DMEP. And so, in January 2006, I moved to a cold and rainy Donegal!

Before I say more, I would like to express our gratitude to the late Jim Rafferty (Glenties) and the late Sister Concepta Murphy (Cork/Ballyshannon), two key people in the development of music education and music-making in Donegal. Without Jim and Sister Concepta, nothing of what we have today would have happened.

Musical growth

From the beginning, Orsi was working regularly with chamber music ensembles for strings. From there the idea of starting a Donegal Chamber Orchestra (DCO) emerged. In June 2006 a course for string players was organised in the Abbey Vocational School. The closing concert of that summer course marked the first appearance of a Donegal Chamber Orchestra.

In recent years the group has consisted of students, amateurs and semi-professionals, led by professional players. I am the artistic director and Orsi is the leader. We have a list of guest artists who have worked with the DCO over those years, including violinist Darragh Morgan, flamenco guitarist Juan Martin and cellist Mihai Dancila. The DCO has also premiered works by composers Ian Wilson, John McLachlan and Derek Ball.

Promoting chamber music has always been part of what we do. In 2009 as part of the celebrations of Haydn’s Bicentenary, we helped to found the Donegal Chamber Music Society, notably with Graham Harrison (Letterkenny), for years a stalwart of the local music scene. Now the Society organises regular concerts, including ‘Sundays in Conwal’ in Letterkenny, and has an annual festival in the autumn.

In 2007 Orsi and I set up a professional chamber group, The Donegal Camerata, working mostly as a string quartet or quintet.

For many years we have also been principal members of the chamber orchestra in my home city, Concerto Málaga. We were delighted when Concerto Málaga were nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2018 for the CD release ‘Serebrier Conducts Granados’.

In November 2009 we started the Letterkenny Children’s Orchestra, nowadays called Donegal Junior Strings (DJS). More recently we started to bring the DJS on school tours. This allows them to share the joy of music making with their school friends and perhaps inspire some of those friends to take up an instrument and enjoy playing music as much as we do!

Thank you

Looking back over these years in Donegal, it’s important to thank the different managers and administrators with the DMEP.
