Four Donegal ETB school projects have qualified for the 60th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. The event takes place in the RDS, Dublin from 11-14 January 2024. The Exhibition is designed to inspire young people to better understand the opportunities that a career in a STEM-related field can offer.
The four projects come from two schools, the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town and Coláiste Ailigh in Letterkenny. Thirteen entries in total have qualified from Co Donegal. The projects that have qualified are:
Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town (1 Individual entry)
- An investigation into the effects of videogames and team sports on the understanding of concepts of game theory and problem-solving in students (Social and Behavioural Sciences)
- Which is the most ‘essential’ essential oil at preventing the growth of fungal mould on citrus fruits. (Biological and Ecological)
Coláiste Ailigh, Letterkenny (2 Group entries)
- Imscrúdú ar éifeachtúlacht Olann gharbh mar inslitheoir tí ailtéarnach (Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences)
- Staidéar ar éifeacht feirmeoireachta, tithíochta agus tionsclaíochta ar bhithéagsúlacht na Leanainne (Biological and Ecological)

- Biological and Ecological category Senior Group Prize: won by Abbey Vocational School’s Jane Faulkner and Robyn Given for their project “Which is the most ‘essential’ essential oil at preventing the growth of fungal mould on citrus fruits.”
- Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences category, third Junior Group prize: won by Coláiste Ailigh’s Sienna Devine for her project “Imscrúdú ar éifeachtúlacht Olann gharbh mar inslitheoir tí ailtéarnach.”
Special Awards
- An Fóram Uisce/Water Award: won by Coláiste Ailigh’s Caolan Mc Taggart, Daithi Mac Diarmaida and Matthew Farrell for their project “Staidéar ar éifeacht feirmeoireachta, tithíochta agus tionsclaíochta ar bhithéagsúlacht na Leanainne.”
