The school has received an award for best Girls C School of the Year, as selected by the Post Primary Schools Committee. This national award was presented at the Annual Awards Ceremony in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght on Sat 11th June. Congratulations also to our neighbours Colaiste Cholmcille Ballyshannon who received the B award.
Basketball in the school is well supported and driven by Principal Mrs Geraldine Diver who has had many years experience court side. We have over 60 girls in the school playing the sport at 1st year, 2nd year u16 and senior level and this award reflects the effort, commitment and achievements of each of these teams throughout the year. Each team trained numerous times a week with coaches Stephen Carty and Mrs Regan and also with the club. Ms Orlagh Carr has been outstanding in her dedication and commitment to the sport since her arrival at the school
The senior and u16 girls both won the regional final and competed in both the league and cup competitions to All Ireland stages. The u16 girls successfully went on to win the All Ireland Cup Final. This has generated great interest and enthusiasm of the sport to the junior girls in the school. First and second year girls both reached the regional semi finals this year and have had a successful year at club level winning the u14 Division 2 All Ireland Final.
Next year all teams will compete at B level, the girls know that it will require hard work but relish the opportunity and challenge competing at this level.
It must also be noted the tremendous work put in to the development of these girls by Donegal Town Basketball club coaches. Without the hard work being put in at club level it would be difficult for the school to achieve these successes.
