Donegal ETB has appointed Marty McCann as the new Director of its Outdoor Education and Training Centre (OETC) in Gartan.
Gartan OETC is the ETB’s 87 acre estate nestled in the heart of Co Donegal. In 2021 almost 4,300 students benefited from a wide range of outdoor education and training programmes there.
Marty has been working in the outdoor education sector since 1995, having previously worked at Gartan as an instructor and tutor from 2005-2020. Since then, he has been working with the Education Authority’s ‘Outdoor Learning Service’ in Northern Ireland. He previously completed a certificate in Community Youth Work at Ulster University and a Postgraduate qualification in Performance Coaching at Stirling University.
Speaking about his new appointment Marty said, “I’m delighted to begin the role of Director at Gartan OETC. I look forward to developing our service provision in collaboration with colleagues at Gartan and the broader ETB. Gartan OETC is a fantastic resource that has positively impacted the lives of young people and students for four decades. To be part of the Gartan team is a privilege and something I very much look forward to.”
In congratulating Marty on his new appointment, Dr Martin Gormley, Donegal ETB Director of Schools said, “I am delighted with Marty’s appointment and welcome him back to Donegal ETB. He takes up the role as Director with very relevant experience in outdoor education and training from his previous time in Gartan and his recent managerial responsibilities in Northern Ireland. Marty will continue the ongoing development of the Gartan Campus and the work led by the former Director Mr Ciaran O’Brien. I look forward to working with Martin who will lead the team in Gartan, a staff which have been to the fore in embracing continuous change over recent years.”
