Overview for 2016 entry:
1. This is a two-year part-time Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching at Level 8. The Diploma is jointly accredited by the University of Limerick and NUI Galway.
2. The programme is free to eligible post-primary teachers and fully funded by the Department of Education and Skills as part of the national strategy to support the implementation of Project Maths and improve standards in mathematics education in post-primary schools by upskilling out-of-field teachers of mathematics.
3. The Teaching Council has confirmed that teachers registered under Regulation Four of the Teaching Council [Registration] Regulations 2009 successfully completing the diploma will meet the Teaching Council’s post-primary curricular requirements for mathematics.
Venue and commitment:
The content will be delivered at Letterkenny Institute of Technology via a blended learning approach. Lecturers and tutorials will be held outside school hours on two evenings and occasional Saturday mornings. There will also be a summer school commitment.
Indicative content:
- Algebra, Calculus, Statistics, Problem-solving & mathematical modelling, Geometry, History of mathematics, Action research in mathematics education
Assessment:
Assessment of maths content modules will be by coursework (c.40%) and module exam (c. 60%). Pedagogy modules will be assessed by essays, portfolios, project work etc.
