[lang_ie]Ghlac beirt ó rang na hIdirbhliana, Cara Bovaird agus Niamh Porter páirt sa Taispeántas Eolaíochta BT ar na mallaibh. Sé ainm an tionscadal a rinne siad scrúdú air nó – Ádh : Fíric nó Ficsean.
Rinne na cailíní imscrúdú ar na miotais agus finscéalta a bhaineann le réimse piseoga maidir le hádh nó mí-ádh. D’amharc siad as cá háit ar tháinig na piseoga ó thús, mar shampla – an mí-ádh a leanann an uimhir 13 nó ag siúl faoi dhréimire agus ansin an t-ádh maith atá feicthe ó sheamair le ceithre dhuilleog. D’úsáid na cailíní suirbhé – áit ar thug siad comhartha maith ámharach do ghrúpa amháin, ceann mí-áidh don dara ghrúpa agus bhí an tríú ghrúpa ag rialú gach rud. Scríobh siad uile i ndialanna ar feadh seachtaine agus rinneadh tagairt ar imeachtaí a mheas siad a bhí mar ádh nó mí-ádh.
Ón scrúdú a rinne siad óna sonraí, tugadh faoi deara go raibh ócáidí níos fearr ag an ghrúpa a bhí an briocht áidh acu níos mó nó mar a bhí ag an ghrúpa eile. Ach sé an tátal a bhain siad as sa deireadh nó go bhfuil gach rud comhtheagmhasach.
Bhain na cailíní an-sult agus taitneamh as an chomórtas ina iomláine agus leis an spreagthacht agus an buzz a théann leis. Is deis iontach seo le bheith páirteach lena chuid comhghleacaithe ar fud na tíre agus le feiceáil an obair iontach atá curtha i gcrích ag na heolaithe óga. Solathraíonn an comórtas seo ardán iontach d’eolaithe agus teicneolaithe óga, le hiniúchadh a dhéanamh ar na féidearthachtaí a thagann san earnáil eolaíochta agus teicneolaíochta mar shlite bheatha.[/lang_ie]
[lang_en-uk]Two of our Transition Year students, Cara Bovaird and Niamh Porter were successful in getting the opportunity to display their project, Luck: Fact or Fiction. The girls investigated the myths and legends surrounding a range of superstitions regarding luck. They sourced information to see where the superstition initially came from, for example, the thought of unlucky thirteen or walking under a ladder etc, and also those associated with luck such as the four leaf clover. The girls conducted a survey with three first groups, one group given a token of luck, one with an unlucky token and a control group with nothing. The groups kept a diary for a week and they jotted down any events that they regarded as lucky and unlucky. From examining the data, the girls noted that the group with the lucky charm noted more favourable events occurring during their week as opposed to the group with the unlucky charm. The conclusion from the girls results suggested that it is all coincidental.
The girls enjoyed the experience of the competition and the buzz and excitement that goes with the whole experience. They had an excellent opportunity to engage with their peers across the country and to see all the wonderful work that was completed and undertaken by the young scientists. This competition provides a brilliant platform for future scientists and technologists and allows then to explore the possibilities that come from a career in the science and technology sector.[/lang_en-uk]
